Transportation
For the 2025 International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL), the most commonly used public transportation will be the MRT. It offers the easiest and most reliable way to travel between the event venues and explore the city. Below is a guide to using the MRT.
MRT (Mass Rapid Transit)
Taipei's MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system is the most convenient way to navigate the city. The MRT is efficient, clean, and easy to use, with clear signage in both Chinese and English. Each MRT line is color-coded, making it simple to identify your route, the following is the four main line:
Green Line (Songshan-Xindian Line): This line runs through key locations, including Gongguan Station, which is the stop for National Taiwan University (NTU).
Red Line (Tamsui-Xinyi Line): Connecting northern areas like Tamsui to downtown Taipei, including Taipei 101.
Blue Line (Bannan Line): This line spans east to west, linking important stops like Taipei Main Station and Ximending.
Orange Line (Zhonghe-Xinlu Line) and Brown Line (Wenhu Line): These lines connect more suburban areas to the city center.
Payment Options
The MRT system can be paid for using an EasyCard, a rechargeable card that allows you to tap in and out of the stations. EasyCards can be purchased and recharged at any MRT station or convenience store. Alternatively, if you don't have an EasyCard, you can visit the help center at the MRT station, where you can buy a single-ride ticket. The staff will provide you with a small magnetic coin that can be used to enter and exit the stations for your selected route.
Getting to NTU (National Taiwan University)
To reach NTU, take the Green Line to Gongguan Station (公館站). Once you arrive, exit through Exit 3, which leads directly to Roosevelt Road and the main entrance of NTU. Follow the signs within the station, and be cautious not to board a train heading in the wrong direction. Always double-check the signs and maps located throughout the station to ensure you're traveling the right way.
